Osteopathic Touch: Relieving Pain Naturally
Osteopathy: A Holistic Approach to Health and Wellness
WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY?
Osteopathy was founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in the mid to late 1800s. As a physician, Dr. Still became disillusioned with the conventional medical practices of his time and began exploring anatomy and principles of nature. He observed that by adjusting the body's alignment and correcting abnormalities, patients experienced significant improvements in their health. This led him to develop osteopathy, a holistic approach to medicine that emphasizes the relationship between the body's structure and its function.
How Osteopathy works

Osteopathy focuses on the interrelationship between the body's structure and function. Osteopathic Manual Practitioners assess and treat patients by considering the impact of lifestyle, posture, and environmental factors on the musculoskeletal system. They use hands-on techniques, including stretching, gentle pressure, and manipulation, to diagnose, treat, and prevent various conditions. These techniques aim to improve mobility, relieve pain, and support the body's natural healing processes.

The philosophy of osteopathy is grounded in the belief that the body has a natural ability to heal itself when its structure is properly aligned and functioning optimally.

Osteopathy aims to enhance the body's ability to manage and recover from ailments, promoting overall health and wellness. By addressing issues such as joint restrictions, muscle tension, and structural imbalances, osteopathy seeks to restore optimal function, reduce pain, and improve overall well-being. This holistic approach can be used to treat a wide range of conditions, including back pain, headaches, sports injuries, and chronic pain. Additionally, osteopathy emphasizes the patient's active role in their own healing process

What to expect
Your first osteopathy assessment visit is all about getting to know your body, uncovering the root causes of any issues, and creating a plan to help you feel better and move more freely.

During this visit, you can expect a comprehensive and holistic evaluation of your health and body. Here’s what typically happens:
  • 1
    Medical History Review
The visit will begin with a detailed discussion about your medical history, including any past injuries, surgeries, ongoing health conditions, your lifestyle, diet, stress levels, and any specific symptoms or concerns you have.
  • 2
    Physical Examination
This will include assessing your posture, mobility, and range of motion. I will also palpate different areas of your body to detect any areas of tension, pain, or imbalance.
  • 3
    Assessment of Body Mechanics
I will assess how your body moves and functions as a whole. I will look at how different parts of your body interact and identify areas where things might be out of alignment or not working together as they should.
  • 4
    Osteopathic Diagnosis and Explanation
Based on the information gathered from your medical history and physical examination, we will take a look at the underlying causes of your symptoms and how different systems in your body might be contributing to the issue.
  • 5
    Treatment Plan
After the assessment, we will discuss a personalized treatment plan with you. This plan may involve hands-on techniques like gentle mobilization, stretching, and soft tissue techniques to help improve movement, relieve tension, and support your body's natural healing process. As osteopathy suggests patient's active role in their own healing process we will choose exercises to fit in your daily life, and discuss lifestyle changes(if necessary) to help you manage your condition and prevent future problems.
  • 6
    Questions and Collaboration
You are welcome to ask me questions and express any concerns you might have. I want to ensure you're comfortable with the proposed treatment plan.
  • 7
    Initial Treatment
Depending on your condition and comfort level, I may begin treatment during the first visit. The treatment is usually gentle and aimed at relieving any immediate discomfort while starting to address the underlying issues.
  • 8
    Reassessment and Follow-Up Recommendations
To address chronic pain, it usually takes about 6 visits, spaced 2-3 days apart. We will schedule follow-up appointments to continue treatment and monitor your progress. I will also provide guidance on exercises or practices you can do at home to support your healing.
On a follow-up osteopathy visit, you can expect a quick check-in on your progress and how you’re feeling since your last session. I will continue treatment, focusing on any areas that still need attention, using hands-on techniques to improve movement and relieve discomfort. I may adjust the treatment plan as needed and provide additional guidance on exercises or lifestyle tips to support your ongoing healing. It's all about building on the progress you've made and getting you closer to feeling your best.
